Anola's Recovery - Discography

"You remind me of someone I've never met"

Lynn, Massachusetts' own Anola's Recovery wrote emo pop tunes which could take on heightened dimensions when Darren and Brian's vocal pairings coalesced to form a kind of angst-filled force. The 2003 demo contains their classic twinkly sound which brings me back to VFWs in some north-shore-suburban town as a tween. When I received their first demo it contained only two songs, "Appendage" and "Shift", which were enough to get me hooked. Since then, somehow, extra tracks were added and the demo benefits as a result. I remember this girl got into Anola's after I did and I thought she was pretty cute. I guess both this demo and that girl symbolize innocence of being an entry-level scenester freshly discovering good local music (the term 'scenester' really brings me back).

Unfortunately that innocence doesn't hang around too often. 2005 brought about the departure of an original member of Anola's, Matt, who was quite a talented guitarist. The band managed to pick up the pieces and recorded another demo/EP at a local studio hotspot called "The Getaway Group". The 2005 EP balances rollicking craziness and emotionally charged meditations, which focused, appropriately enough, on their own lost youth. 2005 EP is better produced and offers tighter performances but the innocence and naïveté of previous years were lost.

I believe this had an impact on how they were perceived both within the local scene and how they perceived themselves. One time in 2005 singer Darren asked me which material I honestly found to be better. At the time my allegiance had lain with the original but, upon further examination, I recognize the need they felt for growth and improvement as both a band and as individuals. I now see the 2005 material as an extension of their maturation process. Unfortunately the band dissolved after this material, though their myspace [LINK] suggests otherwise.

Fourth of July- On the Plains

"I'm in debt, like my country, but she still believes in me..."

Kansas Indie Folk Rock invasion. Crooning love-sick lullabies to missed connections and lost opportunities, which owes something of a debt to the Omaha emo scene before Bright Eyes left the basement and became jaded. This record acknowledges the emptiness in drowning sorrows but continues to go out every night. Good album to get down to.

Nana Grizol - Discography

"our cars broke down and it's just too cold to hitchhike to your door..."

Nana Grizol of Athens, GA are an immensely talented group who vacillate between triumphantly energetic pop tunes and introspective acoustic ballads. Their debut "Love it Love it" is filled with the former which makes for near-perfect dance party fodder, while the latter is well-represented through their second full-length "Ruth". Their latest effort shows growth and a respect for song development ("sands"), as opposed to the instant gratification prevalent in their debut (see: "circles round the moon" and "stop and smell the roses"). Tough to say which offers a more rewarding listen as they are both elicit miles of smiles to even the most cynical of listeners.

P.S. Eliot - Introverted Romance + Bruno single

"we prosper in a troubled medium"

Birmingham, AL's P.S. Eliot offer indie pop gold!! The mixture of Katie Crutchfield's soothing southern-drawl and driving instrumentation, slightly distorted, evokes a head-bopping, fist-pumping devotion usually reserved for athematic hardcore acts. I caught the end of their show in Somerville, MA over Spring Break, and damn-near dropped my forty in exaltation when they got to the chorus of "We'd Never Agree", damn that's catchy. "Introverted Romance" is filled with moments like this. Next time they come around (which is actually sometime in July) I promise not to act like a drunk asshole and show up an hour late. I've also included the new "Bruno is Orange" single because I donated 4.00 USD for it.

Algernon Cadwallader- Discog

Don't even know what to say about this band that hasn't already been said by other blogs. Amazing "twinkly shit" with the dude singer who sounds like Tim Kinsella. Saw these guys at Amherst College last september and they've been on constant repeat on my boom box ever since. I'm almost aching for the new full length. "Fun" is an EP good enough to hold me over until then however. If you don't already know, you aren't too late!! solid dudes too.

BE HAPPY. LOVE THIS BAND.

Grown Ups- More Songs (2010)

Ooooh shit! after generating so much blog-hype with their first demo "Songs" [LINK], Grown Ups resurface with "More Songs" and crush any assumptions that they would be some kind of one-hit-blogspot-wonder. They've moved away from their american football-esque tendencies in "Songs" and come into their own with this album; delivering tight, catchy performances all-around with top-notch production (I believe Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack assisted Grown Ups in this album's creation). They still keep it jangley with this one, at times opting to leave one of the lead guitars clean. This band tightrope-walks the delicate line in producing music that will satisfy both chest-tapping hipsters and stage-diving tough guys. "More Songs" makes sure both types leave their pretensions at the door to sing along in glory.
